Geneva’s favoured geographical position makes it a naturally focal point for the international traveller. Road and rail facilities radiate from Geneva to provide rapid access to the rest of Switzerland and Europe.
HIGHWAY HUB FOR CENTRAL AND WESTERN EUROPE
In recent years, highway construction within Switzerland and in neighbouring countries has turned Geneva into a highway intersection for Europe.
Heading south, motorists can pick up the «Route Blanche» on the city outskirt to reach Chamonix and the Mont-Blanc within one and half an hour, Italy (via the Mont-Blanc tunnel) within two hours.
A branch of this same highway offers the rapid links Geneva-Grenoble to the South, Geneva-Lyon to the West and the South, as well as Geneva-Mâcon to Paris.
Geneva is linked with the Swiss highway system to Lausanne, from where it continues to Vevey (link to Fribourg, Montreux, Villeneuve, Martigny, Sion and the Simplon to the East, and also to Yverdon (link to Neuchâtel) Bern, Basle, Zurich to the North.
The Swiss National Railroad system offers hourly links to Lausanne, Bern, Basel, Zurich and to the famous holiday regions of the Cantons of Vaud and Valais. City and airport of Geneva are joined by rail with more than 200 trains a day including high speed trains such as the TGV and the Pendolino.
Many international routes pass through Geneva to provide convenient con-nections across Europe.
The heart of Paris is only three and a half hours away from Geneva by the TGV (high velocity train).
COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE BY RAIL
Reaching a maximum speed of 270 km/h, city-center to city-center travelling time compaires very favourable with intercity flights.
For the globe trotter who wants to travel and literally «watch Europe go by», what would be more exciting than a train itinerary from Geneva to Paris and from there to London, crossing the Channel by ferry or by the Euro-Tunnel.
Travellers heading South will appreciate the overnight luxury train “Pablo Casals“ connecting Geneva with Barcelone, or the
rapid and comfortable Cisalpino and Eurocity trains to various italian destinations. A round trip from Geneva to Milan for instance, including a leisurely afternoon of shopping or sightseeing can be accomplished in one day.
Many attractive priced rail excursions are available from Geneva. These serve not only the Lake Geneva Region but other well-known tourist centers in Switzerland and France.
